  • Sushila Karki became the first female Chief Justice of ■«* Nepal

■*■ Sushila Karki became the first female Chief Justice (acting) of Nepal’s Supreme Court on April 13, 2016,

replacing Kalyan Shrestha on the top judicial post of Nepal. The constitutional council headed by Prime Minister K.P. Oli recommended the appointment of Karki as CJ of Nepal Supreme Court. She is the third woman in Nepal on top post currently after the President and Parliament Speaker. Karki was the seniormost judge of the Nepal Supreme Court. Her appointment is yet to be confirmed by Nepali Parliament till then she will serve the post as acting CJ.

■s’ Lobsang Sangey was re-elected as the Prime Minister of the Tibetan government in-exile on April 27, 2016 for the second term in a row. Sangey defeated his main rival Pempa Tsering, who is the Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament, by 9012 votes to win the election. Lobsang secured 33,876 votes in his support to win the election. Darjeeling-bom Lobsang will head the 16th Tibet government in exile.

■s’ Finland retained its top spot for the sixth consecutive year in the World Press Freedom Index for 2016,

released by Reporters without Borders on April 20, 2016. The Netherlands and Norway secured the second and third places respectively, making an all-Europe show on the top three spots of the list which covers 180 countries of the world. African nation Eritrea touched the lowest point in the list. India secured 133 position thus year, showing an improvement of three spots in the comparison of the 2015 list.

Japan on April 22, 2016 successfully tested its first stealth fighter jet named X-2. Its indigenously developed single-pilot prototype X-2 took off from Nagoya airport in central Japan on its maiden test flight and safely landed after 25-minute test flight. With the successful trial of X-2, Japan moved a step closer to join the Club of USA, Russia and China which have successfully developed and flown manned stealth jets.

■*■ Former bureaucrat and parliamentarian N. K. Singh has been selected for the prestigious Japanese honour— ‘Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star for promoting economic and cultural ties between India and Japan. Mr. Singh, who has been a former member of the Planning Commission, is among 91 foreign recipients to be honoured during the 2016 Spring Imperial Decoration ceremony of Japan on May 10, this year in Tokyo. ■s1 Nour El Sherbini from Egypt on April 30, 2016 defeated top-seed Laura Massaro 6-11, 4-11,11-3,11-5,11-8 in the final to clinch the World Women’s Squash Championship in Kuala Lumpur. The 20-year old Sherbini is the youngest-ever women’s champion of the title. She defeated compatriot Nouran Gohar in the semifinal to secure her place in the final which she had lost in 2013 against Massaro.

He had won the top Laureus honour in 2012 and 2015 before this one. Novak clinched three Grand Slams—Australian, Wimbledon and US Open and he was also the finalist of the French Open in 2015. Top Laureus award in female category also went to tennis when USA’s Serena Williams was awarded the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year for thirdYime in her career.
